Cash for Clunkers Brings More than Better Gas Mileage

The recent government CARS program or “Cash for Clunkers” has helped consumers save at the pump, stimulated manufacturer and dealer sales and decreased emissions on the road. But there are other continuing benefits to the program that might not be so obvious, both environmentally and economically.

Tow-truck operators, recyclers and other companies have also been positively affected. According to the Detroit Free Press, each year recyclers process enough steel from shredded vehicles to produce 13.5 million new vehicles. Recycling one ton of steel conserves 2,500 pounds of iron ore, 1,400 pounds of coal and 120 pounds of limestone, another environmental benefit. Recyclers and other companies expect a steady stream of vehicles for months to come.

Want a Like-New Car? Look No Further than CPO

What Does “CPO” stand for?...Certainly Positively Outstanding? Not exactly, but Certified Pre-Owned vehicles are like-new cars in a category of their own and are pretty outstanding. The CPO title is only awarded to vehicles that meet demanding standards and pass a meticulous certification process, so you can drive away with peace of mind.

Each vehicle must pass a test as tough as the SATs, with a series of inspections and repairs covering hundreds of items. Technicians inspect everything from the condition of the transmission, brakes and tires to small details such as making sure the speakers don't rattle and then make any repairs necessary.

CPO vehicles carry a CARFAX Vehicle History Report, which includes information about the number of previous owners, where it’s been registered and the car’s maintenance history. The report also confirms that the vehicle has not had any accidents requiring major repairs.

Because strict certification standards eliminate the risks typically associated with financing pre-owned vehicles, manufacturers are able to offer exceptional rates comparable to new cars. Each certified vehicle is also confidently backed by a warranty that begins on the date of purchase. Check out Toyota, Lexus and BMW warranties and current finance offers below:

Toyota and Scion Certified Pre-Owned: 3-month/3,000 mile Comprehensive Warranty, backed by a 7-year/100,000 mile Limited Powertrain Warranty (from original date of first use when purchased as new). Plus, get the added security of 24-hour Roadside Assistance. Additional benefits include a Toll-Free Assistance Line, Substitute Transportation and Travel Protection. See the current Toyota CPO finance rates.

Lexus Certified Pre-Owned: 3-year/100,000 total-vehicle-mile warranty that starts on your date of purchase.  This warranty offers the same coverage new car buyers receive.  Additionally, there are services and privileges like Roadside Assistance, Complimentary Loaner Car and Trip Interruption Service. See the current Lexus CPO finance rates.

BMW Certified Pre-Owned: With BMW’s CPO warranty you’re covered for up to 6 years or 100,000 miles…whichever comes first. Also included for two years with unlimited miles is the 24-hour BMW Roadside Assistance Program.  Vehicles with existing BMW Maintenance may upgrade to a 6-year/100,000 mile Maintenance Program (from original in-service date). How to Keep Your Pet Happy and Safe While Traveling

When planning to bring the furry member of the family along for a ride, you should consider your pet’s safety and comfort when traveling. Here are five of the most important safety tips that will help traveling with a pet a more enjoyable experience for everyone.

1. Prepare your pet for car travel.
It’s not unlikely that your pet will be excited or skittish when first introduced to a moving vehicle. If your pet has never gone anywhere in the car, it's best to take it on some short trips around the neighborhood to monitor its reaction. If your pet has problems, talk to your veterinarian about appropriate pet medications.

2. Put together a travel kit.
When traveling out of state, it’s a good idea to bring along your pet’s health records. Put your name, destination address and phone number on your pet’s travel crate, and never leave without its identification tags. In case of injury, bring a first-aid kit, nail clippers and liquid bandages. And as always, pooper-scoopers, waste bags, extra leashes, treats and water are important items to bring along.

3. Keep your pet safely entertained.
A simple way to prevent your pet from being restless is to bring along its favorite toy or another comforting object.

4. Make food, water and bathroom breaks.
While traveling, bathroom breaks may need to be taken more frequently. Try to stop often so your pet can relieve itself and burn off excess energy. Although giving your pet water in the car is OK, only feed it when you're stopped and give it time to digest before hitting the road again. If you do stop during the trip, never leave your pet unattended in the car.

5. Restrain your pet.
Pet-restraint systems are by far the best way to keep your pet safe during a trip. Pets should always ride in the rear seat in case an airbag deploys, unless you're driving a pickup truck without a rear seat, in which case the front seat is better than the truck bed. When choosing a restraint, consider your pet's size and breed, as small dogs and cats travel best in carriers. Always secure the carrier with a seatbelt. When using large crates, cushion and secure the crate in case of an accident. Restraint systems attach either to the ceiling of your vehicle or the seatbelts, but your pet should be able to move a bit and turn in the seat so it doesn’t feel trapped.
